How to cut card

What you need

A cutting mat with a metal safety rule, a scalpel, a craft knife and a utility knife

Protect your surface

Use a cutting mat. You can also use firm cardboard to protect the surface.

Check your knife

The blade must be sharp, and this is best achieved with a new blade. If your blade is not sharp it will be more difficult to make your cut, and you may go off course, where accidents are more likely.

Prepare for the cut

Place the metal rule on the card you are cutting. Hold the rule firmly, with your fingers in the safety groove that runs the length of the rule.

Make the cut

Hold the knife firmly, but without gripping too hard, and keep it as vertical as possible as you start to make your cut. Do not push too hard: let the blade find its way through the material.

Take your time

Make as many cuts as you need to get through the material, and don't rush it.
